Apple unveils Siri AI and major software updates at WWDC 2026

Apple used its WWDC 2026 keynote to showcase the next chapter of its software ecosystem, with artificial intelligence taking centre stage for Tim Cook’s final presentation as the company’s CEO.

The company’s annual developer conference introduced a revamped Siri experience, deeper AI integration across Apple devices and a host of updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro users.

While no major hardware announcements were made, the event highlighted Apple’s strategy of embedding AI more deeply into everyday experiences while refining the visual design introduced over the past year.

Siri AI finally arrives

The headline announcement was the debut of Siri AI, Apple’s long-awaited next-generation voice assistant. The upgraded assistant is designed to be more conversational, context-aware and capable of carrying out more complex tasks across apps and devices.

Apple says Siri AI will be able to understand on-screen content, maintain context across conversations and complete multi-step actions more naturally.

The assistant will also feature a refreshed interface, including Dynamic Island integration on supported iPhones, allowing Siri interactions to feel less intrusive and more seamlessly integrated into the operating system.

The new experience forms a key part of Apple’s wider Apple Intelligence initiative.

Apple Intelligence expands

Apple continued to build on its AI ambitions with a broader rollout of Apple Intelligence features throughout its software platforms.

New AI-powered tools are being added to apps including Photos, Safari, Mail, Messages and Shortcuts. Features demonstrated during the keynote included smarter writing assistance, enhanced search capabilities, automated workflows and more advanced image generation tools.

Visual Intelligence is also receiving upgrades, allowing devices to better understand and interpret what users are viewing through their cameras and screens. Apple positioned these tools as practical enhancements designed to save time and improve productivity rather than replace existing workflows.

Liquid Glass gets a refinement

Apple’s Liquid Glass design language remains a core part of its software experience, but the company acknowledged feedback from users and developers by making the interface more customisable.

The updated version introduces greater control over transparency levels, improved readability and refinements to menus, sidebars and toolbars across Apple’s platforms. The aim is to preserve the visual appeal of the glass-like aesthetic while making interfaces easier to navigate and read.

macOS 27 “Golden Gate”

For Mac users, Apple unveiled macOS 27, codenamed Golden Gate.

The update introduces deeper AI integration throughout the operating system, including a significantly more capable Siri experience, smarter Safari features and enhanced automation tools within Shortcuts. Users will be able to create automations using natural language, while Safari gains AI-powered organisation features for managing tabs and browsing sessions.

Apple also confirmed that macOS 27 marks the end of support for Intel-based Macs, making Apple Silicon the sole platform moving forward.

Photos, productivity and parental controls

Several everyday apps received meaningful updates.

Photos gains new AI-powered editing features, including Spatial Reframe, which can intelligently adjust image composition, alongside improved enhancement tools. Calendar can now create events using natural language inputs, while productivity features across the operating system have been expanded through Apple Intelligence integrations.

Apple also announced enhanced parental controls, giving families more tools to manage screen time, content restrictions and device usage for children.

A software-focused future

WWDC 2026 made one thing clear: Apple’s future software strategy is increasingly centred around AI. Rather than introducing standalone AI products, the company is embedding intelligence directly into the apps and services millions of people already use every day.

Although some of the most advanced Siri AI capabilities will arrive later and certain features may initially be limited by device compatibility or regional regulations, the keynote demonstrated Apple’s intention to make AI a foundational part of its ecosystem.

With Siri AI finally nearing launch and Apple Intelligence expanding across the company’s platforms, WWDC 2026 offered the clearest view yet of how Apple plans to compete in the rapidly evolving AI era.
